AN EAST Lothian horse riding ace helped Team Scotland win the Home International at Downpatrick Racecourse in Ireland.

Holly Algeo, from Longniddry, travelled to the event with horse Pascha, and they performed superbly, as Holly won the best home international junior at the prestigious event in County Down.

Her win helped the Scottish team claim victory in the Home International, while they were also placed second in the Celtic Challenge team event.

The 14-year-old, a pupil at North Berwick High School, was delighted with her achievements.

She told Courier Sport: "On the day of my ride the weather wasn't great we had strong winds and rain but was told that's why it's called endurance!

"I was the last person to come home for my team and my mum said they were all holding their breath while Pascha was vetted to check she had passed safe and sound.

"We did really well, others got rosettes and placed but best of all and a huge surprise was that I won the best home international junior."

The teenager claimed a trophy as a result of her success.

She said: "The team let out a huge cheer when I won.

"It was a very special time and I will remember it forever."

The county starlet had support from parents Steve and Caroline, and brother Dan at the event in Ireland.

Dan was delighted to see his sister perform so well.

He said: "What a thing to do for your country and what an achievement – very proud big brother and to finish first for your country is very special, well done Holly, very proud of you."

Caroline, meanwhile, added: "It was a real honour to be involved and the team spirit was incredible."
