Orkney 26 Haddington 29

HADDINGTON claimed a first league win of the season with a bonus point win at Orkney.

Two tries apiece for scrum-half Jack Hamilton and wing Kyle Adams helped Rhodri Thomas' side secure their elusive first win, while former North Berwick centre Kyle Hamilton also crossed.

The visitors, who once more chartered a flight from Glasgow to Kirkwall for the match, made a bright start as scrum-half Hamilton went over, before Graham Poke put the hosts on the board with a penalty.

Orkney took the lead for the only time in the match as Adam Baird went over after a concerted period of pressure on the Haddington line (8-5).

The Reds continued to dominate up front, with the returning Callum Low impressing at the scrum, and captain Colin Stuart and lock Harry Hamilton putting in industrious displays.

A chip ahead saw Hamilton gather and dive over for his second of the first half, as Gareth Pritchard converted to put the visitors 8-12 ahead.

Haddington scored a third try of the half, as Adams beat Willie Thomson's tackle to cross.

Pritchard missed the conversion, but Haddington led 8-17 at the break.

The Reds disrupted an Orkney scrum close to their line, but Alan Brown gathered the loose ball and dived over for the hosts' second try.

Poke's conversion made it 13-17, but the county club's response was immediate.

They stretched the home team with good work by the pack, before Kyle Hamilton went over.

Pritchard converted to make it 13-24.

Thomson atoned for his earlier missed tackle on Haddington winger Adams by capitalising on loose play inside the Reds' 22 to score Orkney's third try.

Adam Watt then kicked a penalty to make it 21-24, before Adams scored his second after excellent work by full-back James Ferguson.

Orkney scored their fourth try as Darren McLean powered over late on, but a Pritchard penalty secured victory for the Reds.

They will hope to build on their first league win as they welcome Greenock Wanderers to Neilson Park on Saturday.
