TWO former East Lothian rugby professionals are set to work together at Glasgow Hawks this season.

Former North Berwick ace Tommy Spinks has joined the BT Premiership outfit after he left English Championship side Jersey.

The 22-year-old was on the books at Glasgow Warriors in 2014/15, joining weeks after his new head coach, former Dunbar man Finlay Gillies, was released by the Warriors.

He struggled for first-team action at Scotstoun, featuring just twice in the Pro12, while he also made two appearances for Welsh outfit Ospreys in the LV Cup.

Despite "a really enjoyable" year in Glasgow, Spinks moved to Jersey a year ago, hoping to show off his talents.

The former North Berwick ace, who studied at Fettes College in Edinburgh, told Courier Sport how a freak pre-match accident cost him months of last season.

He said: "I wanted to play regularly and show my potential within a really tough league.

"I had a good pre-season and was in the starting line-up, at number eight, for the first game of the Championship season, against Yorkshire Carnegie.

"Unfortunately, I broke my foot in the team run before the match, and was out for a few months.

"By the time I was back fit, the squad was fairly settled."

The 22-year-old admits it was a frustrating time, unable to break into the side and with no other options to regain the match fitness lost during his months spent on the sidelines.

He added: "It was frustrating because I didn't have any alternative to play or get match fit coming back from the injury."

Spinks is really looking forward to returning to Old Anniesland, and helping the club build on a sixth-place finish last term.

He said: "I'm really excited to be back [in Scotland] and playing for Glasgow Hawks.

"I think we've got a really exciting, young squad and coaching team, with Finlay [Gillies] and Colin Gregor.

"Now I'm back playing, my main priority is to enjoy my rugby and show what I can do."

Spinks captained Hawks to a 43-27 win over Gala in their BT Premiership opener on Saturday.
