A FORMER Musselburgh Athletic captain was named in the SPFL Team of the Week earlier this month.

Brian Martin, who led Burgh to the Scottish Junior Cup final in 2015, earned his place after a stand-out performance for Berwick Rangers last Saturday.

Martin was outstanding as Berwick beat Annan Athletic 2-0, despite a red card to the ex-Burgh ace's defensive colleague Jonny Fairbairn.

The 30-year-old is joined in a three-man defence by Premiership pair Anthony O'Connor, of Aberdeen, and Hearts' John Souttar.

Also included in the side are Hibs midfielder John McGinn and Rangers starlet Jordan Rossiter.

Martin admitted he found out the news through social media.

The former Burgh ace told Courier Sport: "Someone messaged me on social media [to tell me].

"I knew I'd played well but I've played far better. [It was] totally unexpected, never even crossed my mind."

He was, though, delighted to be in the team.

"It's not to often someone from our league gets into it so it's never really given a thought," he added.

Another ex-Burgh ace, Michael Mckenna, was "deservedly" named man of the match, Martin said, while adding: "Football's all about opinions though."

Martin, who can play left-back as well as centre-back, only moved to Berwick Rangers at the turn of the year.

He had considered hanging up his boots following Burgh's 2-1 loss to Auchinleck in the 2015 Scottish Junior Cup final, but was tempted out of retirement by then-Burgh boss Stevie McLeish.
