NORTH Berwick rugby ace Megan Gaffney helped Scotland to a third place finish in the Rugby Europe Sevens Women's Trophy.

The Scots, competing in the second leg of the trophy in Hungary, made an excellent start to the event with a 27-0 win over Norway.

They continued their good form on Saturday by beating Norway (14-5) and Romania (10-7) to set up a quarter-final with the host nation on Sunday.

Gaffney and her team-mates registered a fourth consecutive win with a 12-5 win over the Hungarian side, but slumped to two disappointing defeats thereafter.

They lost their last four clash 31-0 to an impressive Poland team, before losing the third/fourth play-off match 20-12 to Germany.

After all the results from both legs were calculated, Scottish Rugby confirmed the side had placed third overall.

The squad's efforts won praise from former Scotland internationalist Graham Sheil, their head coach.

He said: "I’m pleased with our performances and the players can be proud of their efforts.”

"The squad has been incredibly good to work with. Their work ethic has been exemplary.

“Sevens is a very unforgiving environment and they have worked very hard, put their bodies on the line and have got the rewards for that.”
