DUNBAR United manager Geoff Jones has set his side the challenge of emulating county rivals and winning the South Division title.

Jones, who will be in his third season in charge at New Countess Park, is looking forward to the new season, and has set his sights on lifting the tropphy.

Tranent Juniors stormed to the title this season, losing just one match all season, while Haddington Athletic were champions in 2014/15.

Jones told Courier Sport: "We want to win the league - pure and simple. It's small improvements that's needed not wholesale changes, which is opposite to my first couple of years in charge.

"My main job is to install belief in the squad that we will win the league, starting from the moment we go back to training.

"I can't wait to get going."

The 38-year-old, who is among the top all-time appearance holders for Dunbar United, is keen to address some defensive issues ahead of the new camapign.

He added: "We need to have more belief in ourselves and a greater desire not to lose.

"We were not far away last year but fell short in key moments.

"We need to be more ruthless in defence and more clinical in attack."

The former striker, who retired after a season at Haddington Athletic to become Seasiders boss, has let a number of players go this summer.

The likes of brothers Liam and Michael McFarlane, Grant Thomson, Andrew Common and Darryl Wilson have all left the club.

One new face, though, is centre-back Scott Gibson, who joins from Musselburgh Athletic.

Jones was delighted to sign the experienced defender.

He said: "I see this signing as a statement of intent for the club.

"He is a winner and that mentality will rub off on the team.

"Gibby is a superleague defender of tremendous experience and I expect his influence on the team to be significant."

Jones also explained why several players had been allowed to leave.

"With Tranent and Haddington in the league above and Musselburgh and Newtongrange changing managers it has been especially hard this closed season.

We have a strong squad already with 16 resigned from last season and I won't sign anybody unless they are going to improve what I already have. We need quality in key areas, not quantity."
