A THRILLING new chapter has been written in the history of a famous East Lothian football club with Cockenzie Star’s 1999 squad winning both the Division 2 league title and the League Cup in the space of three days.

Cockenzie Star were originally founded in 1931 and survived for 50 years, becoming one of the leading teams in the county.

Their greatest success came in 1953 when they won the Scottish Secondary Juvenile Cup.

Sadly, the club ceased to exist in 1981 but was reformed in 2011 with no fewer than nine of this season's double winners having been with the club since 2011.

Incredibly, Star have been undefeated in the league since the opening game back in August 2015 and went in to Wednesday’s match against Fernieside knowing that the winner would take all.

Despite a lot of nerves amongst the support, the boys secured a well-deserved 4-1 victory – and the Division 2 league title.

Celebrations were short-lived, however, as the coaches quickly moved the focus to the League Cup final last night against Beechwood FC where another large travelling support cheered the boys on to a comfortable 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Luke Inkster and Liam Crombie.

The Cockenzie lads were presented with both the League trophy and the League Cup sparking huge applause – and this time the celebrations went on into the early hours!

Coach Dougie MacDonald said: "I’m delighted for the lads and the club.

"To have come so far in only five years is testament to a lot of hard work and effort.

"The football they played this year has been of the highest quality and each one of them deserves huge credit for their part in winning this historic double."
