COUNTY boxing star Josh Taylor made quick work of his latest opponent to extend his unbeaten record at the weekend.

The 25-year-old stopped Honduran Miguel Gonzalez after just 93 seconds of the fight in Cardiff, to extend his unbeaten record to five fights.

Taylor, nicknamed the Tartan Tornado, dominated the fight and a fierce jab midway through the opening round saw Gonzalez go down, and the bout was stopped after he failed to beat the referee's 10-count.

The early stoppage means Taylor, who turned professional last summer, is yet to go beyond the second round in any of his five fights.

He previously told Courier Sport he was keen to see the fight go beyond the end of the second round, but was not phased by his short-lived bouts so far.

Ahead of his meeting with Gonzalez, the Tartan Tornado said: "We had to find two new opponents last week.

"The first one pulled out early last week with a hand injury, and then the guy we got as a replacement pulled out as well.

"That was frustrating, but I just had to keep my head down."

The Prestonpans ace, is trained by Shane McGuigan, brother of ex-world champion Barry, who is Taylor's manager.

The former Preston Lodge High School pupil was slightly frustrated about the lack of time in the ring on Saturday.

Taylor added: "It was just one of those things.

"I'm not too bothered about it, I've said before if I can go through my whole career winning fights like that then I'd take that every day of the week.

"I'm getting good experience at these events and I'm sparring with experienced lightweights, so it's all good.

"To be honest I'm loving it all."

Taylor is expected to be on the undercard of Ricky Burns' fight at the SSE Hyrdo in Glasgow, but admitted those plans had not yet been finalised.

"Hopefully this week it'll all get done.

"I'm back up the road just now and I'll be phoning my team in the next couple of days to see what's happening."

And he hopes, if the scene of his 2014 Commonwealth Games triumph is to be the venue of his sixth professional fight, a good county contingent will make the trip along the M8.

Taylor added: "It'd be really good to know soon.

"It would be good to get a big crowd [from Prestonpans] through for that one, if it does happen."

There are also plans for the county fighter to fight in New York City later this summer.
