WALLYFORD powerlifter Micky Yule has been named in the Great Britain team for this year’s Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Yule, 37, was a staff sergeant in the Royal Engineers serving in Afghanistan in 2010 when he lost both his legs, after an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated beneath him.

Part of the Help for Heroes Sports Recovery Programme, Yule will also be taking part in next month’s Invictus Games in Florida.

And he is set to take part in his first Paralympics in September, after being named as part of a four-man GB squad in para-powerlifting that also includes world and European champion Ali Jawad, Natalie Blake and Zoe Newson.

Yule, who is ranked fifth in the world, took part in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014 and has since then been taking part at various competitions in a bid to secure his place in the GB team for Brazil.

At Rio, he will be competing in the 65kg category.

The Paralympics take place from September 7 to 18.
