It was a poignant afternoon at Neilson Park on Sunday as Haddington RFC remembered Armandt Pryor.

The South African back-row was part of the squad last season, but was killed just weeks after returning to his native Pretoria, after his motorbike was hit by a car.

The 23-year-old had returned home to spend time with his girlfriend, who gave birth to their son Leham just weeks after Armandt's death.

Sunday's memorial match saw Haddington take on a President's XV, made up largely of South Africans now living in Scotland.

The team included former Scotland cap Rolland Reid, and ex-Edinburgh winger Conan Sharman, and current Haddington duo Elgin Miller and Keegan De Vos.

There was a minute's silence ahead of kick-off, while Haddington Pipe Band played Highland Cathedral as the two sides lined up to remember the popular back-row.

When the match got under way, the President's XV showed their class, and ran in seven tries to record a comfortable victory.

The Reds scored three of their own – a superb solo effort from Kyle Adams and the pick of the tries on the day, from back-row Mike Legget.

Club captain Colin Stuart, who had given up the captaincy to Armandt's closest friend Alex Cunningham, also went over in fortuitous circumstances.

Youngster Will Syme looked to have gone over, but he was held up, and after the ball was ripped from him, Stuart touched down and the referee awarded the try, much to the surprise of the Haddington side.

After the match, a raffle and auction took place in the clubhouse, while a braai [South African barbecue] was on offer for the

A raffle and auction also took place in the clubhouse, with all the proceeds of the day going to Armandt's young family.

Keith Wallace, the club's vice-president, current president Cliff Livingstone and ex-president Peter Brownlee all told stories of Armandt's time with the club, while the players singed Springbok strips bearing Armandt's name.

Brownlee said: "My life is all the richer for knowing Armandt, and the world is a poorer place for his loss", while Wallace added: "We've had some great players play at this club, and some great South Africans, but for me Armandt is right up there with the best of them."

James Ferguson, the Haddington vice-captain, said: "Outstanding effort from everybody involved for the memorial game for Armandt Pryor today."
