A number of the county's most promising young badminton players will be in action at the Scottish National Junior Championships are held this weekend.

Alastair Campbell, of Dunbar, will start against Edinburgh's Leon Williams, and victory in that match would see him face defending under-17s singles champion Matthew Grimley in the second round.

In the girls’ events Prestwick’s Ciara Torrance is the top seed, in the singles, and both the girls' and mixed doubles, but Musselburgh star Rachel Cameron could provide an obstacle in all three events.

The county youngster is second seed in the singles, while she and Rachel Andrew (Edinburgh) bar Torrance and Sarah Sidebottom’s path to the doubles final, with the winners likely to meet second seeds Lily Farnood (Edinburgh) and Lauren Middleton (Dundee) in the final.

Euan Campbell will be in action in the under-13s draw, and teams up with Bonnyrigg's Andrew Evans in the doubles.

Anne Smillie, chief executive of BADMINTONscotland, said: “The Junior Nationals offer a great opportunity for fans to see the fine young players coming through our junior ranks.

"I am particularly keen to see the quality in the Under 13s as they get ready to work their way through our junior programme.”

Play at Ravenscraig, near Motherwell, starts at 9.30am on Saturday through to and including semi-finals of the mixed doubles and quarter-finals of the other four events.

Sunday’s remaining semi-finals start at 10am with the finals from 1.30pm.
