A county skiing star is set to take part in the Special Olympics GB's National Skiing Championship later this year.

Claire Jeffray, from Gifford, is the only competitor from East Lothian to be selected among more than 100 skiers to take part in the prestigious championships.

The event will take place on the slopes at Serre Chevalier in France from March 13-20.

Iain Gray MSP has sent his congratulations to county skier Claire Jeffray following the news that she is one of over 100 skiers and coaches set to participate in Special Olympics GB’s 2016 National Skiing Championship.

Jeffray is part of a dozen-strong Scottish contingent who will travel to France, and she joins 11 skiers from Aberdeen in the squad.

And her selection has been praised by Iain Gray, East Lothian MSP.

Mr Gray has sent his congratulations to Jeffray, and has also signed a motion at the Scottish Parliament congratulating the dozen selected to take part.

He said: “I met Claire, and her mother Ann, a few years ago at Parliament and have followed her progress since then. To be among the competitors at the National Skiing Championship is a fantastic achievement, while to be the only one from Lothian, and indeed the whole of south and central Scotland, makes it even more outstanding.

“I have signed the motion in Parliament congratulating Claire and her colleagues on their selection. I also passed on my best wishes to her for the championship and look forward to hearing about how she gets on in France later in the year.

"Her selection is also another great sporting success for East Lothian, which continues to excel across a variety of sports.”
