ROSS Charlton’s last-gasp conversion clinched a dramatic victory for Dunbar on Saturday as they saw off Murrayfield Wanderers.

The county outfit have picked up valuable league points recently after a poor start to the season, with their only recent blemish coming on the road at Hawick Harlequins.

And on Saturday they welcomed a Murrayfield Wanderers side relegated from the national leagues last season, but sitting above them in the East 1 table.

In an evenly contested match, it took Charlton’s kick in the final minute to ensure victory, after tries either side of the break from Ewan Patrizio and Chris Baikie.

Mark Coull’s men started the game the brighter and got their reward when Patrizio latched onto the back of a powerful rolling maul to crash over with just six minutes played at Hallhill.

Stand-off Charlton added the extras and gave the home side an early 7-0 lead.

Dunbar temporarily lost Jamie Peters to a head injury, although he returned to the field shortly after, before Baikie was sent to the sin-bin as the visitors pressed the Dunbar line.

Wanderers enjoyed a spell inside the Dunbar 22, but were unable to make the breakthrough and had to settle for only three points for their first-half endeavours (7-3).

The Capital side were out of the blocks quicker in the second period, and reduced the gap to a single point with a second penalty.

Their powerful pack was beginning to take control and they were the source of the visitors’ only try – as their scrum powered over and the referee awarded a penalty try.

The conversion was good, and the Murrayfield men led 7-13.

And Coull’s men were hampered further still when Denham Blair was forced off injured, resulting in uncontested scrums, while Kyle Donnellan was the second home player to spend time in the sin-bin, as he saw yellow on the hour.

Despite those setbacks, though, the hosts were not to be denied, as good work by Patrizio took Dunbar towards the Murrayfield line, before Baikie picked up and dived over.

That left Charlton with the conversion to win the match, and he duly obliged to seal a dramatic win for the Hallhill side.

The county outfit travel to second-from-bottom Duns on Saturday, looking to continue their recent good form (kick-off 2pm).
