Haddington's run in the BT Cup ended at the first hurdle on Saturday, as they were well beaten by Dundee HSFP.

The visitors travelled having made an indifferent start to their league campaign, but plying their trade two divisions above the Reds, and started as big favourites.

Reds head coach Rhodri Thomas was without Alan Laidlaw and Charlie Hamilton in the pack, meaning Alex Cunningham was promoted to start at hooker and skipper Colin Stuart moved to prop.

The backs were unchanged, but there was an appearance on the bench for veteran New Zealander Campbell Te Rito, who had impressed for the 2nd XV.

And the signs in the first 40 minutes were good for Thomas' side as Kyle Adams scampered over, before a well-worked line-out move took Kyle McGarvie over and put the Reds in contention against their higher-league opposition.

Gareth Pritchard was again having a good day from the kicking tee, and he converted both tries and added a first-half penalty, to make sure the hosts were in touch at 17-26 at the break.

The second half was, though, a different story, as the men from Dundee ran in a number of tries, while Haddington were unable to add to their first-half tally, as they were well beaten.

There were positives to take, though, for head coach Thomas, with Kris Paterson again impressive in the back-row, while Adams and James Ferguson again looked sharp behind the pack.

Meanwhile, the club's 2nd XV survived a late scare to beat Stewart's Melville at the weekend.

They scored seven tries in the 40-46 win, but it took a last-minute penalty from Connor Munro to make the game safe.

The 2nd XV will take advantage of a free weekend, but the 1st XV will turn their attentions back to league action, as they travel to the Capital to play RHC on Saturday.
