You recently commented on the impressive transformation in the appearance of the former Crown Hotel on Tranent High Street which, along with the smart coffee shop opposite and the planned Italian restaurant further along, will considerably raise the overall attraction of the town.

Away from the town centre there is now a similar improvement in the form of the striking new care centre off Sanderson’s Wynd.

What a pity, therefore, that the approach road to this impressive facility is flanked by an eyesore even worse than the Crown Hotel of old.

Presumably the former Infant School is preserved under some conservation order, which I would understand to be based on architectural design and outward appearance, since the building neither has nor needs any viable function. That being so, I would have to say that its derelict exterior seriously detracts from any claim as to worthiness of preservation.

Even without the weeds that proliferate in the former playgrounds, any worthwhile preservation of the building itself is marred by the ugly metal screens covering the windows.

Unless there are plans to improve the building – and its surroundings – I think application should be made to whatever appropriate body for permission to demolish and replace it.
