Re: ‘Damaging trade deal must be opposed’ letter from Sheona Hegarty in the Courier of September 5.

The title of this trade deal is the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership.

I was with some others in North Berwick talking to passers-by about it and didn’t meet one person who had even heard of it.

I can recommend further research on the internet, as it could have a truly devastating effect on many important aspects of our lives eg the food we eat, medicines, NHS and other services.

We were campaigning under the auspices of 38degrees and a visit to www38degrees.org.uk/TTIP will give lots of useful information.

Basically, once it is agreed next year, it will open up all our markets and public services to competition from United States businesses who will then be able to sue our Government for loss of trade as a result of restrictive legislation eg more stringent safety rules being passed here compared with the US.

So we need to know about it now so we can lobby our MPs and MEPs. And if you see one of our leaflets or it drops through your letterbox, don’t just bin it or recycle it but give it a read and get informed.
