It was encouraging to receive a swift response from the economic development and strategic investment service of East Lothian Council to my complaint about the unsuitable siting of banners along our beautiful coastal road.

I was assured that planning permission is in place for individual banners to be erected for 28 days and that issues of illegibility were to be addressed with future banners to be approved by transportation.

This, therefore, means that given sufficient ingenuity in the council’s strategic investment service about event promotion, we can be blessed with continuous blots on our landscape, provided the subject matter changes every 28 days!

The chairman of our community council is to be congratulated on ensuring the removal of the banners on the western approach to Gullane. However, where is the logic in five pairs still remaining, strung from Aberlady Bay to Dirleton Castle?

When planning permission was given for 28 days for the Open Golf Championship, was this outcome really envisaged?

Whether legible or not, whether approved by transportation or not, the fact remains that this advertising, in a rural setting, is in the wrong place.
