It is unfortunate that the ever-expanding town of Dunbar has no facilities to adequately showcase performing arts and musical theatre.

There are many talented people in the town, nurtured through various local groups – drama, choir and dance to name but a few – but sadly there is no adequate venue in which they may perform.

Last week, Dunbar Lyric Group performed The Sound of Music and each performance was completely sold out. The show was superb and received standing ovations from the appreciative audience every night.

Unfortunately, however, the only available large venue, within 12 miles of the town, is Dunbar Grammar School.

To privately hire the school hall for a week (rehearsals and show nights) it is my understanding that the cost is nearly £2,000.

The downside for the school, though, is massive inconvenience when an outside group come in and require space and the use of facilities particularly when they (the school) are not benefiting.

Whilst the school hall is big enough for local performing arts, it is just a school hall and not a theatre.

A missed opportunity is that the newly built Bleachingfield Centre cannot accommodate performing arts.

Local groups are often the first contact for children and young people so it is sad that our community is unable to adequately facilitate their development.
