New legislation comes into effect at midnight on Friday, December 5, and we will see the reduction of the drink drive limit in Scotland.

I would like to remind everyone of the message I gave out in my last article – there is no safe alcohol limit for drivers.

Drivers must be aware that my officers will be carrying out increased high-visibility patrols and road checks throughout the county from this date and during the festive period.

If you have a drink and decide to get behind the wheel of your car, the chances are you will be stopped at some point and breathalysed. The consequences of being caught over the limit are too high. The cost to you, your family and others is not worth taking.

Please do not be tempted to have “just one drink”. Do not take the chance, it is too risky – you may pay the price with your job, liberty, family or life.

Throughout this week Police Scotland and every other force in the UK have been actively involved in the Counter Terrorism Awareness Week. This campaign concludes on Sunday and I would like to remind you all that the sole purpose and aim is to help the public understand the threat to the UK and ask for their help by reporting any suspicious activity.

It is important to make everyone aware that although the threat level has recently been increased to ‘Severe’, meaning a terrorist attack in the UK is ‘Highly Likely’, there is no specific intelligence of any planned attack, but this raised threat level does mean that we all need to be vigilant.

The focus is on these key areas: vigilance in crowded places and transport hubs, preventing violent extremism, preventing financing of terrorist groups, and ensuring the safety and security of goods and materials which could be used by terrorists.

If you have any information you feel will assist us in combating terrorism please call 101 for non-emergencies and general enquiries, in an emergency call 999.
