We are now in the latter stages of summer and it is perhaps a good time to reflect on another busy period for police in East Lothian.

In addition to the daily duties carried out by Community Policing Teams across the county, many local officers were also deployed to the Commonwealth Games and played a vital role in keeping people safe while Scotland received national media attention.

I am delighted to welcome all of these officers back to the division and have already heard many positive stories of how the policing operation was carried out.

Closer to home, we have recently observed a rise in thefts from homes where doors and windows were left unlocked.

This summer has seen many days of warm weather and it is understandable that the public may be trying to ventilate their homes to keep cool. However, it is essential that when properties are left unattended then they are appropriately secured to ensure they do not become easy targets for criminals.

Anyone looking for information on safeguarding their homes or belongings can contact their local policing teams or visit the Police Scotland website at www.scotland.police.uk All local schools within East Lothian have now commenced their new terms. However, even outwith the holiday period, it is important that children are kept safe – especially if playing near busy roads.

Over the summer holidays police attended two incidents where youths aged six and 10 were involved in road collisions in Prestonpans.

Fortunately, neither child sustained serious injury, but these incidents serve as a reminder of the dangers the road network can present.

On an exciting note, East Lothian is preparing for a number of large events across the region, including the Scottish Half Marathon.

I would urge those who are taking part or attending as spectators to ensure there personal safety so these events can be enjoyed by everyone.
