I’D LIKE to begin this week by declaring that I absolutely do not support Brexit, I never have, and I don’t need to be prompted to make my position clear.

I’ve been on the record against Brexit since David Cameron first broached the subject and I will continue to vigorously advocate our membership in the EU and in the single market. The people of Scotland made it clear this is what they want and the benefits of remaining in the EU clearly outweigh any perceived costs.

Given this week’s shock result in the US Presidential race, it’s clear that now more than ever we need unity within our nation. Isolationist policies, such as those being brought forward by Tory Brexiteers, threaten to leave us standing alone in the world.

On November 8, the Scottish Government published research into the issues surrounding fracking and announced it will now undertake a full public consultation, opening early next year. This will give everyone an opportunity to express their views. I encourage all those interested to participate.

Until this work is completed, the Scottish Government has put in place a moratorium on fracking, in stark contrast to the gung-ho approach of the Westminster Government. This approach has been welcomed by both the environmental NGOs and by industry.

This week, I was delighted to attend the Musselburgh Citizens Advice Bureau’s AGM. The staff and volunteers are a fantastic asset to our community, providing free and confidential advice whoever you are and whatever your problem. I highly recommend a visit if you find yourself struggling.

I had the opportunity to address them on the recent Social Security consultation, which reviewed how we will use newly devolved powers relating to benefits. Many thanks to those who participated in this consultation and to the CAB for their continued hard work.
