One eyewitness near the scene said on Twitter: “The Bullwood Project building Nitshill Road in Glasgow is on fire.

“The fire brigade say stay away and close all windows as there is asbestos in the building which has collapsed. The sounds coming from the fire even half a mile away is loud.”

Another eyewitness replied: “Been awake since half two with the noise. We thought it looked like it was in Cleeves Road. Can you tell if St Bernard’s school has been affected by it? The Bullwood backs right onto their playground.”

The original witness responded: “I think the playground will be okay, but I doubt if the school will be open as it’s still crackling just now.”

Glasgow City Council said in a short statement: “St Bernard’s Pri RC School is closed to pupils today because of a nearby fire at Nitshill Enterprise Centre. This is a precautionary measure. Staff should report to Gowanbank Primary. Residents are advised to keep windows closed.”

Nitshill Road has been closed to all traffic between Cleeves Road and Seamill Street.

There is no access to Nitshill Road from Peat Road.

Road users are asked to avoid the area and expect delays in the run up to the morning rush hour period.

In addition to the closure of Nitshill Road, Peat Road is currently closed to all southbound traffic between Barrhead Road and Nitshill Road.

Traffic exiting Silverburn Shopping Centre on Cowglen Road can still access Peat Road northbound only.

Some First Bus Glasgow diversions have already been put into place.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said firefighters were alerted to a “well-developed” fire which had taken hold within in a single-storey building on Nitshill Road at 2.32am.

She added: “Operations control mobilised a number of fire engines, including two aerial appliances and firefighters are tackling the flames.
