Cumberbatch, best known for his roles in Sherlock and Doctor Strange, will be playing Patrick Melrose in the show based on the novels by Edward St Aubyn.
His character is described as“an aristocratic and outrageously funny playboy” who turns to substance abuse to erase bad childhood memories of his abusive father and a mother who tacitly condoned the behaviour.
Each episode of the series will be based on a different book and will take place over several days in Melrose’s life, from the South of France in the 60s, New York in the 80s and Britain in early 2000s.
Allison Williams, star of Girls also recently joined the cast which includes Jennifer Jason Leigh, Hugo Weaving and Anna Madeley.
