An opening date is yet to be confirmed for Aldi’s new supermarket in Tranent, despite rumours it might open in October.

The store on Haddington Road is expected to open “before Christmas 2015”, but Aldi refused to put a timescale on the building work, which is progressing at the site.

The store’s opening time has already changed – they originally told members of Tranent and Elphinstone Community Council they hoped to be open by “early 2016”, but updated members to say it would be open before the New Year.

When work started on the store, at the site of the former Tranmare Hotel, in April, a spokesperson for Aldi said the supermarket was “due to be completed later this year following a six to seven-month build programme”, while adding: “An opening date will not be set until later in the construction programme.” However, a spokesperson for Aldi this week refused to be drawn on an opening date for the store, and told the Courier: “An opening date is still to be announced.” Tranent’s Aldi store will be the second largest in Scotland, behind a store in Leven, Fife.
