Scott Glynn has been nominated to open Tranent’s long-awaited Asda store next month.

The supermarket chain took nominations for the town’s ‘Local Hero’ – who would cut the ribbon when the store opens its doors on August 20.

An Asda official told the Courier that there was “a clear winner”, with Mr Glynn nominated in recognition for his work within the community.

The 52-year-old has raised more than £100,000 through his Walk with Scott fundraisers, and the last of the triology of walks was held earlier this year.

In May, Scott led more than 100 people on a two-day walk between the county’s six rugby clubs, to raise money for charities, including Tranent youth group Recharge, where he is chairman.

Scott was delighted, and shocked, when he spoke to the Courier last Friday.

He said: “It’s fantastic. It’s always an honour to be nominated for anything, but I always say that it’s not just about me, there’s a team of folk involved.” The Elphinstone Road resident revealed that he nominated another community stalwart for the award.

“I nominated James Bruce, in fact, because he does a lot of really good work but he sometimes doesn’t get the recognition that I get,” Scott added.

Jason Clark, Asda Tranent’s store manager, said: “I’d like to thank everyone for their nominations and we are very pleased to be able to honour Scott’s contributions to Tranent. I hope we can be as good for the community as he is.

“We also look forward to welcoming new customers to the store when it officially opens on August 20.

“I’m keen to meet as many people as I can during opening week, and I can assure them that our new colleagues will deliver great customer service and we’ll all be happy to help in any way we can.” The supermarket chain has reiterated that all is on course for it to open as planned on August 20.
