Youth group Recharge has no plans to leave its current home on Church Street, according to project manager Alan Bell.

Concerns were raised over the future home of the youth group, for youngsters in the Fa’side area, with news that the former day centre it uses is up for sale.

Recharge, established 10 years ago, occupies part of the building within the former day centre, which is owned by Co-operative Estates.

They have put the building up for sale, with an asking price in the region of £300,000.

But Mr Bell was quick to confirm Recharge’s short-term future will be in its existing home.

He told the Courier: “It’s nothing new to us, we’ve been aware of the situation for a while.

“We have a lease on the Recharge building and we plan on renewing that.

“If the building is sold, we will work with whoever buys it to secure a new lease. There are no panic buttons being pressed by anyone at the moment.” The issue was raised at a meeting of Tranent and Elphinstone Community Council (TECC) last week, where ward councillor Donald Grant told members the sale of the former Co-op “could cause problems” for the youth group.

But Mr Bell was confident that Recharge would be in its Church Street home beyond its 10th anniversary celebrations, which are to be held at the end of next month.

A get-together has been planned for July 30, when those involved over the first decade of the youth group will be invited back to celebrate its landmark birthday. Mr Bell confirmed that invites would be sent out soon “Our key priority is to support the young people of the Fa’side area,” he said.
