The second Ross High School Sports Personality of the Year Awards took place last month, with Callum Wilson scooping the main prize.

Callum, a judoka, beat competition from Joshua Jack, Jamie Muir and Laura Stevenson to claim the title, while Adam Welsh scooped the volunteer coach of the year award.

Ross High youngster Callum is the current Scottish Grand Prix champion, finished seventh in his category in the British Judo Championships, and trains with the Scottish talent development squad.

Elsewhere at the awards evening, hosted by Graeme Easton, the volunteeer staff of the year award went to Rachel Anderson, while Chey Carrigan was the volunteer pupil of the year.

John Smith claimed the volunteer of 2015 award, presented by Tranent Rotary Club.

Coaches were asked to nominate their player or participant of the year. Each winner was chosen based on their hard work, commitment and positive attitude and, including the school athletics champions, more than 40 awards were given out on the night.

Staff and pupils were asked to nominate coaches and volunteers for awards and their Sports Personality of the Year – and there were over 20 nominations, reduced to the final shortlist of four.

A huge range of sports were represented, from Highland dancing to trampolining and hockey.

Mark Urwin, Ross High’s Active Schools co-ordinator, praised all the youngsters for their efforts, and congratulated all the winners.

He said: “Huge congratulations to everyone who attended the Ross High Sports Personality of the Year Awards. In our second year it was fantastic to see our founding aim of celebrating the commitment, talent and success of pupils who attend Ross High. “Notable thanks to Graeme Easton for compering, John Smith for arranging all the visual and sound effects, the PE Dept. for their assistance, Mr Leslie and Mr Doig for helping shortlist the awards.

“Finally the biggest well done to every one of the awardees; humbling and inspiring stories aplenty.”
