Tranent’s new Aldi supermarket is on course to open before Christmas.
Building work started at the Haddington Road site in April and the steel frame for the store was erected at the end of last month.
At a recent meeting of Tranent and Elphinstone Community Council, the group’s then-chairman Colin Martin had hoped that it might open before Aldi’s predicted “later this year” timescale.
But an Aldi spokesperson said that building work was “progressing well”, while refusing to be drawn on any timescales until “nearer the time”.
An Aldi spokesman told the Courier on Monday: “Work on site is progressing well and is on schedule. We are working hard to bring the Aldi brand to Tranent later this year.” When it opens on the site of the former Tranmare Hotel, the store will be Aldi’s biggest in the county, and follow its stores in Musselburgh and Haddington.
The former Co-op site in North Berwick has also recently been bought over by the discount retailers.
