Tranent-based Progressive Sports Development was celebrating as it scooped a Social Enterprise of the Year award.

The enterprise, which provides sports-based programmes for children as young as 18 months, claimed the award from Mid and East Lothian Chamber of Commerce.

It recently entered into a partnership with two local football clubs, Musselburgh Windsor FC and Musselburgh Youngstars FC, to assist in recruiting players and coaches, as well as implementing healthy eating initiatives for the participants.

Scott Gibson, founder, said: “We began this idea over a year ago to develop players at a higher level in addition to supporting the local sports clubs at grassroots level by bridging the gap between the nursery, schools and communities. Since we started this we have grown from having a handful of children to over 400 a week attending our many programmes.” And he praised the help of Social Enterprise in East Lothian (SEEL), adding: “Since our inception, Elaine [Gale] at SEEL has been an integral part of our growth, the support and guidance we have had as well as the networking events SEEL hold has allowed us to meet people that have given us so much advice and this has been responsible for the position we are in. If anybody has a social enterprise idea you need to get in touch with SEEL as the help is invaluable.” Elaine Gale, SEEL network development officer, added: “I am very keen to speak to anyone with an idea for a social enterprise and can offer 1 to 1 idea consultation sessions, personal support, business advice, access to funding support.” SEEL holds regular events and meetings, aimed at attracting and developing talent and potential.
