A football tournament was held in memory of a Tranent teenager who passed away last year, to mark the first anniversary of his death.

Kyle Wood (pictured), a pupil at Ross High School, died last April, and last weekend, girls from clubs around the country gathered in Tranent in memory of the 14-year-old.

Glasgow City were among the clubs invited to take part by Hearts Women's and Girls, who hosted the tournament, and, after a string of impressive performances, they got their hands on the inaugural Kyle Wood Memorial Trophy.

Scott Wood, Kyle's dad, explained the reasons behind the tournament.

He said:'I'm one of the coaches at Hearts under-13s girls' and Kyle was one of what we call the junior coaches.

'Kyle got on really well with all the girls, and the coaches.' The day got under way at Foresters Park with a minute's silence, as members of Kyle's family joined players and coaches in paying tribute to the lifelong Hearts fan.

Kyle's mum Susanne was awarded a commemorative Queen's Baton at East Lothian Council's Celebrating Sport awards last year in memory of her son, who was due to carry the baton, and found out the news just weeks before he died.

And the tournament was praised by those who attended, as Ronald Wilmot, a parent of one of the girls taking part, said:'As a parent of one of the Rangers girls, I would like to say a big well done to all involved in the Kyle Wood Memorial tournament.

'It was well organised and the girls enjoyed it. I hope it can get turned into a bigger and better tournament for years to come.' Hearts under-13s girls' hosted the event as Kyle's dad, Scott is their coach, while a number of Kyle's friends were also involved with the team on the day.

And one of the Hearts youngsters said:'He [Kyle] helped at some of our games for a few years and he was a part of the team.'
