A MAN was taken to hospital with head injuries after being attacked twice in a matter of minutes as violence broke out on the streets of Tranent on Sunday evening.

The 35-year-old man was assaulted as he left the Day-to-Day on Bridge Street at about 6pm.

He managed to walk away from the scene but a few minutes later, as he was talking to another man who stopped to see if he needed help, a gang of unknown men emerged from a nearby property and launched a second assault.

It is understood that the 35 year old man suffered injuries to his head and body, while the 44-year-old man who came to his aid also needed to be taken to hospital for treatment following the brutal second attack.

Police in East Lothian are appealing for witnesses following the attacks on Sunday.

Both victims were taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary following the attacks. Police declined to say whether any weapons had been used during the incidents.

Detective Constable Paul Begley said: “These were two vicious attacks carried out in the centre of the town and we are extremely keen to trace those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice.

“Anyone who can assist with our ongoing enquiries is asked to contact police immediately on 101 or, alternatively the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
