Building work has begun on an extension to Windygoul Primary School – with another Tranent school also in line for bigger premises.

The building work, which will see Windygoul school have a double-storey classroom block added to the existing facility, got under way this month and is expected to be completed by the beginning of the new school year in August.

Earlier this year, plans to bring forward the development of the school were discussed at a meeting of the town’s community council, while a spokesperson for East Lothian Council had told the Courier that the local authority was “considering their options”.

Now East Lothian Council has confirmed that the project to deliver seven new classrooms has now started.

A council spokeswoman said: “This project consists of the construction of new build extensions to the existing Windygoul Primary School facility and consists of a new double-storey classroom block to the south of the existing school building and an extended dining hall area.

“This project has been procured through the HUBCO and the main contractor, Morrison Construction, commenced on site [last Monday] and are presently working on their site establishment. “The project is programmed for completion during August 2015 for the start of the new school term.” When the plans were first announced, community council chairman Colin Martin said: “I can understand the need for the school to be bigger, especially with the housing developments that have been planned.” Meanwhile, ward councillor Donald Grant comfirmed that Sanderson’s Wynd Primary School is also set to be extended, with that scheme due to go out to tender in the near future.

Windygoul Primary School opened its doors in 2007, with Sanderson’s Wynd opening the following year, at a combined cost of more than £15 million.
