A TRANENT five-year-old who has raised more than £1,000 to help a disabled classmate to walk stepped out hand-in-hand with her friend across the Forth Road Bridge on Sunday.

Orla Grant, a pupil at Windygoul Primary School, held an open day earlier this month to raise funds for her classmate Ollie Porter, who suffers from hydrocephalus and epilepsy, and as a result is unable to walk.

Kind Orla wanted to raise money for her classmate, also five, to get an Upsee – a harness which would allow him to stand up and walk properly.

The fundraiser gathered more than £1,000, while sponsors also donated £1,000 to the total, with the Waterside Bistro in Haddington agreeing to sponsor Orla the full cost of the Upsee.

With the Upsee then purchased, the pair headed to the Forth Road Bridge on Sunday, where Orla fastened a love lock celebrating the pair’s friendship.

The friends then took each other by the hand and walked across the bridge together, with Ollie’s parents also able to walk side by side with their son.

Orla’s mum Kirsty told the Courier: “Thirty-one of us and four dogs were there, including Minnie Mouse and two of Orla and Ollie’s nursery teachers from last year, Mrs James and Mrs Lunum, who were touched by Orla’s story.

“Ollie’s mum Kirsty was emotional as she got to walk side by side and hold her son’s hand when he was walking. It was such an emotional day!” Ollie’s mum, Kirsty Porter, had previously told the Courier: “Orla’s fundraising for Ollie is so generous and it is even more special as Orla is a very special friend for Ollie and has been since they were in nursery together.” Orla’s incredible efforts have ensured that not only has the Upsee been bought for Ollie, but that extra money raised will now go to the Child Brain Injury Trust.
