Ross High School celebrated its diamond anniversary over the weekend by hosting a number of events.

A packed programme saw the school hold a party last Friday morning, with some of the pupils who attended Ross High School the day it first opened in 1954 returning to join the current pupils and staff for the event.

Indeed, the current pupils were encouraged to dress up in ‘50s-style clothes, and decorate their registration class doors before the school held a birthday party.

And that was followed by an open morning on Saturday, where old pictures and artefacts from throughout the school’s 60-year history were on show, and there was an impressive turnout of former pupils and local residents, as well as some of the current crop of Ross High students.

The school’s landmark birthday celebrations were then rounded off on Saturday evening, when Ross High was transformed to welcome 150 guests for a three-course meal.

Local funnyman Scott Glynn, himself a former pupil at the school, provided the entertainment, with sixth year pupil Caitlyn Vanbeck, the talented former Edinburgh’s Got Talent winner, also taking to the stage to sing three 1950s classics – including When I Fall in Love, for which she received a standing ovation.

There was also a raffle drawn, which raised over £2,000. Headteacher Paul Reynolds confirmed that money would now be spent on new gym equipment.

Mr Reynolds was delighted that the celebrations had reached out to so many people; current and former pupils, staff and their families, as well as the wider community.

He told the Courier: “The celebrations have been a real success. The foyer was filled with boards showing newspaper clips, photos and numerous other items from over the years.

“It was a joy to see so many people cringe at the hairstyles and fashions from times gone by, as well as hearing stories from all the ex-pupils and staff.”
