Organisers of a dementia-friendly day in Tranent have hailed the event as a “great afternoon”.

Sue Northrop and Maureen Allan put on the event to give local people the chance to find out more about dementia and what facilities are on offer in the town to help sufferers.

The event was opened by the town’s pipe band, and local dance company Huguet Boogie performed through the afternoon.

A number of activities took place in the town centre, where The Fraser Centre allowed sports fans to reminisce through Sporting Memories with Scott Glynn, while STRiVE provided a Victorian doll’s house and photos from Tranent of yesteryear.

They were kept company by Simon and his labrador Ness, a Therapet who is trained to visit people in care homes, day centres and hospitals.

The Scottish Fire Service were also in attendance, and Recharge opened up to provide opportunities for people to learn how to use the internet.

Elsewhere, the day centre kept those in attendance fed and watered, while there was also an opportunity to knit, or find out information on everything from healthy living to legal advice.

Organisers Maureen Allan and Sue Northrop said: “It was a great afternoon, and gave local organisations the chance to get to know Tranent and meet each other.

“We had people coming in to volunteer, get some advice and have a natter. Over the next few months we’ll be talking with people from across the community and local community groups to get these ideas out into action.”
