There was a significant change to Tranent High Street this week, with Bobby Marr handing over the reins of his grocer’s shop.

Mr Marr retired last Thursday, bringing to an end more than 50 years of family involvement with P & H Marr on Winton Place.

The greengrocers is now under new management.

Colin Martin, chairman of the town’s community council, told the Courier it was “the end of an era” for the town.

He said: “It’s very disappointing – Marr’s has been one of the longest-serving shops in Tranent.

“Bobby and his family have been there as long as I can remember, and I’ve lived in Tranent all my life.” Tranent comedian Scott Glynn described Bobby as “a legend”.

He said he remembered sending his oldest son, who is now 30, to the shop while he was still at school, and remembered Bobby’s relaxed approach.

He added: “My eldest son is 30 and he used to go in for a mixture.

“The type of guy he was, the kids would go in, and sometimes they’d forget to lift their money, but Bobby would say to them ‘just tell your dad to drop it off tomorrow’ – the man’s a legend.” There was disappointment among the community when Mr Marr confirmed his plans to sell the shop, with Matthew Martin, a Tranent resident, taking to social media to share his views.

He tweeted: “Can’t believe Bobby Marr is selling the shop, it’s iconic of Tranent High Street. Where will I get my slush and mixture now?” Mr Marr declined to comment.
