A brave Tranent man who recently found out his cancer had returned for a third time has continued on his fundraising trail.

Kenny Martin, who has lived in the town all his life, found out in early June that his brain tumour, originally diagnosed in 1999, had returned.

But just nine weeks later and following successful surgery, Kenny is back at work and planning his next fundraising adventure.

Plans to do the Moonwalk in Edinburgh to raise money for Maggie’s the following week were immediately halted as Kenny underwent craniotomy surgery in June, but he says he now feels in a position to be able to think about fundraising for the charity again.

In their attempt to raise money for the charity, which supports cancer sufferers and their families, Kenny and partner Tina plan to walk a 15-mile route of the county next month.

They will begin on September 7 at the Loch Centre in Tranent, and follow the A199 to Longniddry, where they will then walk the old railway walk to Haddington, before heading back west and through Gladsmuir to Macmerry, before returning to Tranent.

Kenny, who lives with Tina at Toll House Grove, said of the walk: “Whilst we aren’t walking the 26 miles that we were going to walk on the Moonwalk, we estimate that it is 15-16 miles.

“Now some people may not think that that is far, but I only had my craniotomy surgery nine weeks ago and I have only just returned to work last week.” The duo have undertaken fundraising for Maggie’s before, when last year Tina put aside her fear of heights to complete an abseil from the Forth Railway Bridge, where she raised more than £800.

Kenny underwent chemotherapy in 2013 after being diagnosed with a brain tumour, 13 years after being first diagnosed with the same condition, but he admits the service offered by Maggie’s has been a huge support Kenny told the Courier: “Tina and I, like many other people who use the services at Maggie’s, cannot thank them enough for the emotional support and advice that they are able to offer in a particularly stressful and upsetting time in our lives.

“Any donations to support Maggie’s would be really appreciated as they have been a great support to Tina and I over the last two years and we need to be able to thank them in some small way.” Anyone who would like to join Kenny and Tina on their walk is welcome, and they plan to depart the Loch Centre at 10am, with the aim of returning at around 3pm.
