There was delight for a young Tranent resident last week as he was chosen to be a Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet for East Lothian.

John McFarlane, who lives on Elphinstone Road, was presented with the award by Lord Lieutenant for East Lothian Major Michael Williams at a ceremony in Liverpool, much to the delight of the 16-year-old.

John, a sixth year pupil at Ross High School, told the Courier: “I was over the moon, quite chuffed.” He admitted he was shocked to have been appointed to the role, which will see him act as an ambassador for the young people of the county.

“I had heard about the position before but I was quite surprised when I got the letter through the door,” he added.

His parents were also delighted at their son’s appointment.

Mum Katie said: “It was a proud moment for myself and his dad, and all the family.

“It came as a surprise because we didn’t know he had been nominated.

“He is a good cadet, and he goes to everything that’s going on, so we’re all delighted for him.” Major Michael Williams, said: “I hope it is a real accolade for them.

“On Remembrance Sunday, and at any occasion I need someone to give me a hand; [the Lord Lieutenant’s Cadets] will come along, and they love it.” John is one of two cadets appointed to assist the Lord Lieutenant this year.

Preston Lodge High School pupil Grant McCathie, an air cadet, is the other young person appointed to the role.
