Proposals have been put in place that could see development work at Windygoul Primary School being brought forward a year.

Earlier this year, East Lothian Council outlined plans to build a further three classrooms at the school, but according to a council spokesperson, that figure now appears to have more than doubled. At a recent meeting of Tranent and Elphinstone Community Council, it was mooted that the development would be brought forward 12 months and start in summer 2015.

In a statement, East Lothian Council told the Courier they were currently “considering their options” but hoped to see the work get under way next year.

A statement from the council said: “The proposals are that Windygoul Primary School would be extended to provide seven additional classrooms, general purpose rooms and ancillary accommodation. We hope to see this work under way in 2015.” But TECC chairman Colin Martin admitted that he was surprised to learn that the number of classes being built had drastically increased, but understands the need for development at the school.

Mr Martin said: “The introduction of seven classrooms does come as a surprise in the respect that we’ve been told [previously] it would only be three.

“Tranent is getting bigger all the time, so it does make sense, but that’s the first I’ve heard of them building seven new classrooms.” Mr Martin added: “I can understand the need for the school to be bigger, especially with the housing developments that have been planned.” The school opened at an original cost of more than £6 million, in 2007.
