TRANENT cricket club was very much a family affair earlier this month as THREE generations of the McMillan family turned out for the club’s third team.

Brothers Colin and Neil were joined on the field by their 67-year old father Malcolm, while Neil’s nine-year-old daughter Ella completed the family quartet.

It was a historic day for the club too, as they turned out a third side for the first time in their history, thanks in no small part to the contribution of the McMillans.

Colin McMillan told the Courier: “The chance for the four of us to all play together was really special.

“I haven’t played for nearly 13 years, but I’ll definitely be trying to get along and play for Tranent more regularly.

Colin finished on 38 not out, while his brother struck an impressive 97 and Ella, from Pencaitland, helped herself to a wicket – aided by her father, who took the catch.

“[Ella’s wicket] was a real family effort, and we all thoroughly enjoyed it,” Colin added.

“I think dad was a bit embarassed to be involved but he did really well, he fielded a lot but I think that might be his retirement game!” Club secretary Scott Russell was delighted with the family’s involvement, saying: “That’s what we’re all about, and it was great to see.

“They all did really well, too, and it was brilliant for the club to have its first ever thirds match.” The McMillan quartet were part of a winning effort, with Tranent securing victory by five wickets.
