PLANS for the sequel to the highly successful ‘Walk with Scott’ challenge are taking shape, with the backing of cricket teams in the county and the confirmation of the charities involved.

Tranent comedian Scott Glynn, president of Ross High Rugby Club, announced the plans for the second charity walk last month – dubbed ‘Walk with Scott 2’ – after the success of last May’s walk, which saw participants walk to and play a match at each of the county’s six rugby clubs, raising more than £34,000 for 21 charities.

Slight changes have been made to this year’s walk, which is set to take place on the weekend of May 3-4, with the announcement that there will be four, rather than five, core charities.

The Bill McLaren Foundation, Cahoonas and Teenage Cancer Trust have all been retained from the last week and will be joined by SAMH (Scottish Association Mental Health).

It had been hoped that Tranent youth facility Recharge would be the fifth charity, until problems setting up a fundraising page were encountered, but it will still be involved, and people taking part can choose a charity of their own to raise money for if they wish.

“We choose SAMH because mental health is a big issue at the moment,” said Scott. “A lot of people suggested that.” He added: “It’s looking good. We have got a few folk signed up already, while some have expressed interest.

“We have three other charities already. We’re hopefully going to get a lot of charities involved.” The event will see Scott and friends walk about 56 miles, taking in all six of the county’s rugby clubs, with participants playing a game of tag rugby at each.

Other county clubs have thrown their support behind the cause, with East Lothian Cricket choosing Walk with Scott as its charity partner for 2014 at its AGM.

It has also been decided to rename the East Lothian cricket Village League and County Cup for the year the Walk with Scott 2 Village League and Walk with Scott 2 County Cup.

“Sometimes awareness is just as important as money,” said Scott. “The cricket clubs had a meeting and decided to do this.

“It’s just fantastic. A couple of the boys are going on the walk as well.” Explaining East Lothian’s cricket clubs’ decision, Scott Russell, club secretary at Tranent Cricket Club, said: “Scott’s a supporter of the local teams. He has been a very good supporter of Tranent Cricket Club.

“The rest of the clubs were thinking it was a fantastic thing to get involved in.

“If we can help raise money it is a win-win.

“It is local guys and girls doing what they can to help.”
