THE achievements of the Tranent sporting community have been celebrated.

Tranent and District Community Sports Club held its fourth annual awards ceremony at the Loch Centre last Friday evening.

Paul McGregor, club chairman, told the Courier: “It was a great night – it really seems to be growing year on year.

“It is all about recognising the achievements of the sportspeople in the area and encouraging them on.

“We’ve got really varied talent in the local area so it is to show them that people do recognise what they do.”

The Sportsperson of the Year award was won by Team Scotland boxer Mitchell Barton, of the town’s Bronx Boxing Gym. Barton, from Berwick-upon-Tweed, competed at the Commonwealth Games earlier this month but was eliminated in the first round.

It was a good night for the boxing club as they also scooped the Community Club of the Year prize.

Swimming star Stefan Krawiec won the Junior Sportsperson of the Year award – the 12-year-old is a multiple national champion for his age-group.

Michael Dick, of Tranent Colts, took the award for Volunteer of the Year, while Karl Third, of the same club, won the Disability Sportsperson of the Year award.

Team of the Year went to Ross High hockey, while Ross High RFC were recognised with a special Contribution to the Community prize. The rugby club’s efforts clearing streets during the Beast from the East snow storm saw them take that accolade, while the Junior Team of the Year gong went to Black Diamond Thai Boxing Club, who have enjoyed a medal-laden year.

Olivia Taylor was named Junior Volunteer of the Year, while the Ross High School hockey team took the prize for Contribution to School Sport and Ross High hockey coach Alison Gordon received the Coach of the Year prize.

The Community Project accolade went to the jogscotland group that is run from Meadowmill while Mr McGregor himself received an award for lifetime contribution to local sport. He is a stalwart member of the town’s junior football club and of Tranent & Preston Village Cricket Club.
