THE family of a young Tranent girl who suffers from a rare form of cerebral palsy have launched a campaign to buy a bed which will allow her to sleep through the night.

Little Lacie Stevenson’s condition can cause her to wake up in agony during the night after her body becomes twisted.

Mum Tanya said the youngster needed a specialist sleep system which would help keep her in one position through the night and avoid pain.

Lacie, who will turn four next month, lives with her family in Tranent.

Doctors diagnosed the youngsters, who is quadriplegic and unable to speak, as having a rare condition of the brain disorder caused by a duplication of chromosome 16.

The complex condition means Lacie and her family face a number of challenges, one of which is getting some sleep during the night.

Tanya said: “When Lacie is sleeping she has no controlled mobility, she can tend to cross her legs but cannot uncross them, which causes her a lot of pain and she wakes up crying.

“The sleep system we need involves a special mattress and sheets which will hold her in position and also help control her temperature.”

Lacie has three older sisters – Chelsea, 19, Courtney, 14, and Darcy, nine – and lives with mum Tanya and dad Shaun, a scaffolder, at the family home on Steading View.

Tanya worked as a support worker before becoming a full-time carer to Lacie.

The family now hope to raise nearly £1,500 to buy the sleep system for Lacie through a crowdfunding page.

And the whole family have become involved in raising awareness about the condition, with sister Darcy raising funds for charity Bobath Scotland, which provides therapy for children with cerebral palsy, when she competes at the martial arts YOKKAO championships at the end of this month.

Darcy’s fellow competitors from Black Diamond Thai Boxing Gym, Tranent, where she trains, will also wear green armbands in solidarity during the event.
