POWER walker Margaret McLeod is in training for her fourth Over the Moon double moonwalk this summer.

Margaret, 57, from Tranent, has been taking on the mammoth moonwalks for 11 years in support of breast cancer charity Walk The Walk.

In that time, she has completed two London Moonwalks, 10 Edinburgh Walks, 3 Over the Moon walks – in which participants do the 26.2-mile trek twice, with just 14 hours allowed – and the New York Marathon.

This year, she is taking on the double moonwalk for a fourth time, with her personal best time to date 12 hours and 18 minutes.

Margaret, who works for McInroy & Wood Ltd in Haddington, can be found most days power walking three miles every lunchtime as part of her training.

She told the Courier: “I initially became involved as a good way to challenge myself and keep fit.

“The beauty of the Moonwalk is that it is open to everyone, with different challenges for different abilities.

“It is also a great social event and I have made many good friends over the years and found fantastic walking buddies through the Walk the Walk website.”

Walk the Walk organises the events each year, with money raised going to charities and organisations involved in the fight against breast cancer.

Participants stand out by donning decorated and colourful bras.

As well as taking part in the walks, the charity is looking for volunteers to help along the route by handing out water and cheering on walkers.

Margaret said that the charity also supports walkers with training plans to help those taking part get in top shape ahead of the big walk.

She said: “I’ve probably raised around £8,000 over the years and the money raised in Scotland has, I know, helped so many people with breast cancer.

“Walk the Walk gives so much support to those helping raise money; last year I was fortunate to be able to power walk the New York City Marathon with a team from the charity – it was such an amazing experience walking through the five boroughs of New York dressed in our decorated bras, raising many a smile and cheer, and also of course raising awareness. “Walk the Walk has a presence in many events abroad and it is a wonderful way to have a holiday, see a new city and do something good at the same time.”
