A SECOND primary school in East Lothian has been hit by an outbreak of a sickness bug.

About 40 pupils at St Martin's Primary School, in Tranent, were off sick today with symptons of the bug.

Parents collecting children from the school, which has 181 pupils and 38 youngsters in the nursery, were given letters from East Lothian Council issuing NHS Lothian advice on what to do if their child becomes unwell.

Last week more than 100 children from Cockenzie Primary School were impacted by an outbreak of norovirus, also known as the winter vomiting bug.

Dozens fell ill while a number were kept at home by parents concerned they would catch the sickness bug.

A spokesperson for East Lothian Council said: "A number of pupils at St Martin’s RC Primary School have come down with a sickness bug.

"As we have an incidence of norovirus at Cockenzie Primary School, we have contacted NHS Lothian’s Public Health Team for support and are sending out a letter from the team today with advice for parents and carers.

"We have arranged for a deep clean of the school over the weekend and have made sure that children know to be extra careful about handwashing etc.

"There are currently around 40 children off school with the sickness bug. We will keep parents up to date with developments."
