A kind-hearted Tranent fundraiser is preparing for his next ambitious adventure, as part of the Stand Up to Cancer campaign.

Adam Cook is preparing to stand the full distance of a return train journey to London, and raise money for Cancer Research UK on October 9.

And the 47-year-old, who works for Asda at The Jewel, explained why the charity is close to his heart, and the reasons behind his fundraising idea.

He said: “In March 2013 my father found a lump on his neck and went to the doctor.

“Visits to hospitals across Edinburgh followed, but the news was not good. He had a form of blood cancer and the feeling was that chemotherapy would help, this started to make him worse not better and was changed to tablet form, the reaction was still the same.

“The news for dad however was not good, “how long do I have?” he asked. The count down began and sadly on the January 5 2014, he passed away.

“I stood for six days at work two years ago, and then on a tram in Edinburgh for 12 hours last year, so I wanted to do something more this year.”

Last year’s campaign saw Mr Cook raise almost £1,000 for Cancer Research UK, and Adam is hoping his latest fundraising venture generates more still.

And he will be joined by next door neighbour George Jack, who works for Virgin East Coast, who Adam thanked for their support in allowing the unique fundraiser to take place.

Mr Cook will take part in the mammoth fundraiser next month “in memory, with pride and respect for a man that showed great dignity in his last few days - my father”.

His fundraising efforts have generated almost £300 so far, and Mr Cook has set his sights on breaking the four-figure barrier with his latest venture.

“I’m hoping to get £1,000 but as long as we beat last year (£921)”, while adding the challenge will last between 10-12 hours
