Aldi opens a supermarket in Tranent on October 15 – and is looking to recruit 70 people county-wide.

Work is well under way at the store off Tranent’s Haddington Road – at the site of the former Tranmare Hotel – and now an opening date has been confirmed by the supermarket chain.

Robert Stoddart, the company’s property director, told the Courier: “Our construction programme has gone extremely well and we are ahead of schedule with our opening plans.

“We are very excited at the prospect of bringing the Aldi brand to Tranent, since we know our stores in Haddington and Musselburgh are popular with East Lothian shoppers.

“We will be announcing more details nearer the time but hope readers will take note of our opening date.” The opening date announcement comes less than a week after the nearby Asda store opened its doors for the first time.

Meanwhile, Aldi is looking to hire more than 70 people for stores across East Lothian.

The food retailer has a range of vacancies both in current shops in Haddington and Musselburgh, and upcoming stores in Tranent and North Berwick.

Aldi is looking to recruit 12 deputy store managers, 42 store assistants and 18 stock assistants.

Anyone interested in applying should do so via the Aldi Recruitment website: www.aldirecruitment.co.uk Successful candidates will be trained in existing East Lothian Aldi stores.

Deputy store managers will be responsible for managing the store team in the absence of the manager.

Candidates applying for Aldi’s store assistant positions will receive full training, and will be required to demonstrate a good level of numeracy to effectively carry out accurate and efficient till operation, and will also be responsible for stock management and merchandising.
