A SCHOOLBOY was rescued from the River Esk by two police officers after he found himself trapped in deep water.

The officers were looking for the 15-year-old, who had been reported missing, when they spotted him in the water.

They immediately went into the river to help the youngster back to the safety of the bank.

The incident, which happened in Musselburgh last month, has led to Constables Linzi Anderson and Alan Meikle receiving recommendations for Meritorious Conduct Awards.

The two officers, based in the town’s police station, were out looking for the teenager when they spotted him in the water.

He had waded out towards the Roman Bridge, where the water reached his shoulders, and found himself unable to swim back to shore.

The officers immediately took the decision to go into the water after the teen, helping guide him back to dry land.

Chief Inspector Matt Paden, local area commander for East Lothian, praised the officers for putting concern for the safety of the youngster ahead of their own welfare.

He said: “These officers put aside concerns for their own welfare to bring this boy to safety and showed true professionalism and dedication in the line of duty.

“Their bravery and determination make them a credit to the service and also to their community. I have no hesitation in recommending them both for Meritorious Conduct Awards.”
