Gullane Golf Club has opened its newly refurbished clubhouse, after undergoing “an extensive 21st-century upgrade”.

With the likes of world number one Rory McIlroy, American Phil Mickelson and defending champion Justin Rose set to compete at the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open next week, the new-look clubhouse will play host to the European Tour.

However, David Morgan, club secretary, has warned that the changes may not be immdiately apparent to the thousands of fans expected at Gullane for the prestigious event.

He said: “The members’ clubhouse has been a landmark on Gullane’s skyline for nearly 100 years, so it was imperative that any changes would not affect the look of the village.

“Instead, we wanted to retain the exterior of the clubhouse, while revitalising the interior to accommodate a busy, modern-club with all of its demands. I am pleased to say this was achieved.” The 18-month project saw the clubhouse close, while builders moved in, with the club moving over the road, building temporary accommodation next to its visitors’ clubhouse.

And the task of upgrading the clubhouse went to award-winning Edinburgh design firm Susan Stephen Architects.

They completely redesigned the first floor, which incorporates the main dining facilities, while a new glazed golfers’ entrance has been added at the rear.

Players can now access the new entrance lobby directly from the locker rooms and sit out of public view.

Susan Stephen, managing director, said: “Gullane is a conservation area, so retaining the façade and elevation of the clubhouse was essential.

“It is a dominant building in the landscape and visible as you drive into the village. It is an important landmark that we wanted to reinforce.” And club captain Robert Dick is delighted with the end result.

He said: “It represents a considerable investment but clearly illustrates our continued commitment to providing our members and visitors with a world-class experience. Although we have only just moved back in, the response has been extremely encouraging. We are extremely pleased.”
