RESIDENTS are being urged to show support for WWF’s Earth Hour today (Saturday).

East Lothian Council is supporting the initiative, which will see the lights switched off in buildings and homes for an hour from 8.30pm.

The annual event aims to focus the world’s attention on the plant and the need to protect it.

Thousands of iconic landmarks globally, including Times Square in New York, are switching their lights off.

Earth Hour’s unique display of darkness has become a global phenomenon, with hundreds of millions of individuals coming together each year.

In 2014, a record-breaking 162 countries and 7,000 towns and cities joined the world’s biggest celebration for our planet.

Councillor Norman Hampshire, environment spokesman for East Lothian Council, said: “East Lothian Council is proud to take part in Earth Hour and we are excited to be involved with such a dramatic and inspiring event.

“Everyone can make a difference to help protect our planet and we all have a key role to play.

“I’d urged as many East Lothian residents as possible to sign up, either as an individual or an organisation, via the WWF website.”
